Atlanta (2000)
The inaugural World Conference on the Promotion of Mental Health and Prevention of Mental and Behavioral Disorders was held at The Carter Center, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, on December 5-8, 2000. It followed several years of planning by the World Federation for Mental Health and The Clifford Beers Foundation of the UK in collaboration with The Carter Center, and brought together more than 250 policy makers, public health leaders and scientists working in the field. Twenty-seven countries were represented. The speakers included Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director-General of the World Health Organization, and Dr. David Satcher, Surgeon General of the United States.
